UnionPay International has announced a new collaboration with a duty-free shopping company in Turkey.
The firm will work alongside ATU Duty Free to provide a QR code payments system in over 40 duty-free shops across Turkey.
The move will mean that owners of UnionPay bank cards will now be able to pay via QR code when shopping in the stores.
The move is a milestone for the firms as it will mark the inaugural moment that QR code payments will be accepted at the stores.
ATU Duty Free is itself a collaboration between the firm Unifree Duty Free and TAV Airports Holding.
The firm operates stores at Istanbul New Airport in Turkey’s most well-known city, and it also has presences at other major airports across the nation, including Izmir and Ankara.
Overall, it has 45 stores.
In a press statement, a major figure at UnionPay International’s Middle East Branch described the new move as a way of responding to a renewed customer demand for security.
James Yang, who is the company’s general manager for the branch, said that there was a fresh interest among clients when it comes to ways of making online money transfers.
“Payment behaviors are changing and users are looking for the fastest and the most secure ways to make their payments,” he said.
“UPI has long along been taking this into consideration,” he added.
He went on to emphasise that the two firms had already worked together to a significant extent.
“ATU Duty Free has been our valuable partner in Turkey over the years and I believe UnionPay users will better enjoy shopping at ATU Duty Free shops with this new experience,” he explained.
On ATU Duty Free’s part, the chief executive officer Ersan Arcan added that the worldwide operation of UnionPay International was a factor in the firm’s decision to collaborate.
“As ATU Duty Free, we always attach importance to following the innovations and maintaining cooperation with global brands,” he said.
He also emphasised the fact that the new service is innovative and secure.
“I would like to say that, we are happy to provide a modern and safe shopping experience to our clients,” he added.
