When sending sums of money internationally, use a currency exchange provider to make savings
You can apply for a temporary two year visa, if you are over the age of 66 and invest approximately £400,000 into New Zealand over a two year period. The visa will cost you approximately £1,700 and you will need to demonstrate that you have about £250,000 in maintenance funds and a pension or income of £32,000 per annum. After two years, you can re-apply, providing you meet all of the requirements.
Make your money go much further with a currency exchange broker
You’ve saved extensively for your retirement so don’t waste money carrying out foreign exchange transactions through a bank. For large sums of money, the percentages will almost certainly lose you thousands in the process. Currency exchange providers can give you an exchange rate which is much closer to the interbank rate, between 0.5-1.5%, where a bank will offer 4% over the interbank rate at best. Banks tend to charge fees for transactions, which can be between £5 - £30 per international transfer, currency exchange providers will charge low to zero fees.
They can also facilitate regular international payments, handy if you want to transfer your pension monthly. For larger transfers, you can fix a rate up to two years in advance, to guard against adverse exchange rate fluctuations.
