- Shopify, which is one of the world’s leading e-commerce platforms offering merchants the chance to sell online to a global customer base, will work with Alipay as part of a new partnership.
- The collaboration will allow Alipay to be offered as a direct payment method without the need to use a third party.
- A senior figure at Shopify described the move as a way to open up “borderless commerce” and to help improve the purchasing experience of end users in the new markets.
Global e-commerce platform Shopify has announced that it will work with Chinese e-wallet firm Alipay to increase opportunities for cross-border payments in e-commerce.
Shopify said that it is going to work alongside Alipay to allow merchants on its platform to take payments from Chinese users.
In total, it is believed that there are over one billion active users of Alipay in China.
The move does not represent the first time that Shopify users have been able to harness the benefits of Alipay though.
It used to be the case that third-party providers could offer merchants an Alipay integration service.
However, the latest move will make the link between the two firms seamless, improving the user experience.
The move is also timely, coming ahead of one of the most important shopping periods of the year in China – next February’s Lunar New Year celebrations.
The move is also distinctly international.
Shopify online shop owners in the US will be able to access it first.
As time goes on, more markets are expected to be added to the list.
These include a number of significant Asian markets, such as Indonesia, South Korea and India.
Pakistan, Hong Kong and more are also expected to be added.
In a press statement, one of Shopify’s senior figures explained that a “borderless” approach to commerce is part of the firm’s belief system.
Kaz Nejatian, who serves as the vice president of product and merchant services at the firm, said that Shopify was committed to making this a reality for merchants on the platform.
“At Shopify, we believe in a world of borderless commerce and are focused on helping our merchants build thriving businesses – not just within their own markets, but on a truly international scale,” he said.
He added that tapping into the Asian consumer market offers a real opportunity for Shopify online storefront operators to expand their bases.
“Reaching consumers across Asia is an enormous growth opportunity for our merchants, and Alipay has brought inclusive financial services to more than one billion people in China,” he said.
He concluded his remarks by focusing on the experience of shoppers when it comes to buying online.
“Through today’s partnership, we’ll help our merchants provide the best possible shopping experiences for this new audience of cross-border consumers,” he said.
