  • The Netherlands has been ranked as having the best quality of life in the world, according to international cost-of-living database Numbeo.
  • House prices, cost of living and purchasing power were among the factors taken into consideration.
  • The Netherlands remains a popular destination for international students, with the vibrant cities of The Hague, Rotterdam and Eindhoven attracting young people from all over the world.

International cost-of-living database Numbeo has listed the Netherlands as having the best quality of life in the world.

This likely comes as no surprise to the many international students who currently study at universities across the country, who have been drawn to the country by its healthcare system, their purchasing power facilitated by exchange rates and the relative safety compared to other major European nations.

Staying safe, and finding support throughout their education can be particularly important for international students, and a reliable money transfer service, for example, is essential for parents and families looking to support students who are studying internationally. This allows for international tuition fees, housing and other costs to be paid in a safe and secure way.

The study took into account a number of other factors, including the cost of living, pollution levels and the average commute length. While the Netherlands scored well on these points, it was unsurprisingly given a low score for its climate and weather.

Three Dutch cities performed well in a separate ranking of quality of life in cities.

The Hague, the official administrative centre of the Netherlands, was ranked the best city to live in in 2023, with Eindhoven coming in second and Rotterdam in sixth.

The Netherlands has long been a popular destination for international students, and as Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, more and more UK students have chosen to study there.

This includes international students who take their whole degree at a Dutch university, and students on study-abroad programmes such as Erasmus or the recently introduced Turing Scheme.
