International money transfer firm, WorldRemit, has announced that it has hired tech executive Sophie Krishnan to serve as its Chief Operating Officer.

Krishnan has had extensive experience in the technology world, and has worked for a number of recognisable names including Tramline and Expedia.

She also has a wide range of expertise across different sorts of disciplines and departments, including commercial and marketing. She has also led product teams in the past.

In addition to her technology experience, Krishnan has worked as a strategic advisor at Bain & Co.

The hire is part of the WorldRemit team’s plans to expand the range of services they offer.

It comes after it was announced that the cross border payments firm carried out a successful Series D fundraise worth $175 million US dollars.

The firm offers cash sending services to more than 150 nations around the world, and accepts remittances sent from more than 50 nations.

It is a pioneer in many ways, with the money-sending side of the equation operating an entirely cashless system. It does, however, permit cash collection and mobile payouts – among others.

According to its press statement on Krishnan’s hiring, the firm offers it service and “operate[s] in 6,500 money transfer corridors worldwide and employ over 800 people worldwide.”

In a statement, Breon Corcoran – who serves as the CEO of WorldRemit, and who Krishnan will directly report to – said that the appointment will bolster the “strong leadership” at the firm.

“I am delighted that an executive of Sophie's calibre and industry experience has chosen to join WorldRemit at this exciting time,” he said.

“WorldRemit has been a pioneer in making money transfers as easy as sending a text and as we continue to grow and stand out on speed, service, security and value, we need strong leadership. I welcome the insight and rigour that she will bring and look forward to working with her,” he added.

And Krishnan herself added that she was particularly excited to be working for the company during a period of growth – describing the current moment as a “critical time”.

"I am excited to be joining WorldRemit at this critical time as we move into this next phase of growth,” she said.

“World Remit is a leader in our field and we have exciting plans to accelerate our growth, help customers transfer money securely and quickly and reduce the cost to them."
