  • UnionPay, which is a well-known provider of payments services in the United Arab Emirates, has announced an expansion of its QR code services in the country.
  • The company will now offer its services to more than 10,000 merchants across the country, and will work alongside e-commerce company Network International to do so.
  • A senior figure at UnionPay said that the firm was looking to deliver security and speed benefits to both sellers of goods and consumers in the country.

A cross-border payments and payment services provider in the Middle East has revealed a big boost to its QR code payment service options.

UnionPay International said that it will be cooperating with the digital commerce provider Network International to offer expanded QR provision in the region.

Those with UnionPay cards can now use QR code services at over 10,000 outlets in the United Arab Emirates.

It is believed that the move will be particularly targeted at travellers from abroad who come to the UAE once travel restrictions around the world are less onerous.

According to press reports, there are several different reasons why this decision has been made.

It will contribute towards the “full digital transition” plans in place in Dubai, for example.

It will also help the region’s economy rebound following the coronavirus pandemic.

It will help customers from nations such as Singapore and China to ensure that they can pay for goods in a way that is convenient for them.

In a statement, a senior figure at UnionPay International Middle East said that the company wanted to improve the experience of clients on various fronts – including security and speed.

James Yang, who is the general manager, added that the company wanted to help both sellers and buyers.

“UnionPay is committed to offering UAE citizens and residents a safer, smoother, and more convenient digital payment experience while prioritizing payment security for every transaction for merchants and consumers,” he said.

He went on to point out how widely accepted UnionPay cards are currently in various financial services contexts, including at cash machines.

”UnionPay cards are accepted across the UAE on all ATMs and POS terminals, and we would like to invite more customers and merchants to experience the innovative QR code and other contactless mobile payment services.”

Ahmed Bin Tarraf, regional president at Network International, added that his firm will continue to collaborate with UnionPay.

“We will continue to work closely with UnionPay to support increased acceptance of QR code-based payments among merchants in the UAE,” he said.

“Acceptance of digital payments plays an instrumental role in strengthening merchants’ value proposition to their consumers and we are delighted to take the lead in supporting UAE merchants as they prepare for continued recovery post-COVID.”

UnionPay works in around 180 countries worldwide and it also has issuance rights in nearly 70 regions and countries.
