- Thunes, a big brand in the global money transfer sector, has announced that it will be pairing up with Tencent Financial Technology to offer instant payouts to users of Weixin and WeChat.
- The move is historic as it makes Thunes the first payments infrastructure firm to make such a partnership – and it is expected to improve access to the Chinese market.
- “We are excited to bring the ability to connect our global customers with Weixin’s massive consumer base, creating tremendous opportunities for service enhancement and revenue generation for all members in our ecosystem,” said a spokesperson for Thunes.
Thunes, a leading name in the international money transfer industry, has announced that it will be offering instant payouts to over a billion users of Weixin, which is owned by major Chinese finance brand Tencent Financial Technology.
The move is historic as it makes Thunes the first payments infrastructure firm to make such a partnership.
It will also give organisations in the wider Thunes network the opportunity to make global cash transfers to people who use Weixin already. This, in turn, is likely to improve their access to the Chinese market.
Weixin is known primarily in the money transfer field as WeChat, which is its international brand. There are more than one billion users of WeChat and Weixin in China, according to press reports.
In a statement, Daphne Huang, the Senior Vice President for Asia-Pacific at Thunes, said that the Chinese market was now seen as a major leader in the sector – especially when it came to innovation.
“China is now seen as a global leader in digital payments and payment innovation, and mobile payments are at the forefront of the evolution,” she said.
“We are excited to bring the ability to connect our global customers with Weixin’s massive consumer base, creating tremendous opportunities for service enhancement and revenue generation for all members in our ecosystem.”
For Tencent Financial Technology, meanwhile, the General Manager for Asia Pacific, Wenhui Yang, said that the company was constantly on the lookout for ways to improve.
“We are always looking for better ways to serve our users. So it is only natural for us to partner with a global network like Thunes, making it easier and more affordable for Weixin users to receive money globally,” he said.
“This move boosts the seamless payment experience, and we strive to make cross-border remittance as easy as sending a message.”
