- Gift is the largest ever to DonorsChoose.org
- Money used to fully fund all 35,647 active campaigns on the classroom crowdfunding site
This week, DonorsChoose.org announced a huge donation from blockchain and money transfer facilitator Ripple that fully funded every active request on the nonprofit's site.
The $29m donation from Ripple is the largest single gift in DonorsChoose.org history. With it, all of the 35,647 classroom project requests on the site from more than 28,000 public school teachers at 16,561 schools in all 50 states have been completely fulfilled.
By the numbers, Ripple's donation means that roughly one in six public schools across the country will receive much-needed cash for textbooks, supplies, field trips, classroom technology and other essential resources.
According to officials at Ripple, the company was moved to make the gift because of DonorsChoose.org's impressive track record of helping improve the quality of education for students all over the US.
Ripple reportedly issued the funds in its proprietary XRP cryptocurrency, which was then converted to US dollars and distributed to active campaigns on DonorsChoose.org.
Ripple has been making a mark on the international money transfer industry with XRP, announcing a string of partnerships with traditional payments platforms in recent months to help streamline and simplify cross-border transactions for global users.
"We are awestruck by the generosity of the Ripple team. Their gift will provide learning materials and experiences to more than a million students, overwhelmingly in low-income communities," said DonorsChoose.org founder Charles Best. "I doubt that there has ever been a day when more classroom dreams came true."
DonorsChoose.org is the leading nonprofit helping public school teachers all over the US crowdsource funds for resources and projects to help improve students' educational experience. To date, more than 27 million students have benefitted from the $650m DonorsChoose.org has helped teachers raise for their classrooms.
