  • Phos has announced that it has joined the PCI Security Standards Council as part of a push to help improve the safety of cross-border payments around the world.
  • The move is happening among an increased push towards security standards for the PCI, and will see the organisation sharing experiences and ideas on how to improve safety standards.
  • “We are thrilled to be joining the PCI Security Standards Council to support its efforts to make payments more secure globally,” said a spokesperson for Phos.

Phos, a provider of software-only Point of Sale systems (SoftPoS), has confirmed that it will be joining the PCI Security Standards Council.

The company said that it will join the council as what is known as a “participating organisation” in order to help it secure cross-border payments data across the world.

It comes as payment-handling institutions are developing and adopting the PCI’s security standards.

The move will mean that Phos will contribute to the development of safety standards and will be able to provide suggestions on new initiatives.

It will also contribute to discussions around best practice and experience at the community meetings held by the PCI, which are run once a year.

In a statement to the press, the executive director of the PCI Security Standards Council said that the context of the move was one of “increasingly sophisticated attacks” on systems.

Lance Johnson explained that prevention and mitigation were crucial.

“In an era of increasingly sophisticated attacks on systems, PCI Security Standards and resources help organizations secure payment data and prevent, detect and mitigate attacks that can lead to costly data breaches,” he said.

“By joining as a Participating Organization, Phos demonstrates they are playing an active part in improving payment security globally by helping drive awareness and adoption of PCI Security Standards.”

The chief executive officer of Phos said that the organisation was “thrilled” at the prospect of joining the group.

Brad Hyett explained that the work that it does to help improve payments safety was international in nature.

“We are thrilled to be joining the PCI Security Standards Council to support its efforts to make payments more secure globally,” he said.

He went on to say that phenomena such as contactless payments and the rise of the mobile phone meant that new responses were required.

“The payments industry has grown exponentially over the last few years. We have seen the rise in contactless payments and the proliferation of mobile payments.”

He concluded by pointing out that payment data security was essential for consumers who were involved in the industry.

“As such, now more than ever, it is crucial that we are reinforcing payment data security to protect consumers from any potential threats.”
